The Mulligan River Aboriginal Corporation Language Project is seeking expressions of interest for a linguist with some transcription experience to transcribe approximately 12 hours of audio in Antekerrepenhe and Wangka-Yutjurru, two languages of central Australia and Western Queensland.
This is a proposed three year project in the grant application phase. A linguist is needed for the first two years, paid on an hourly basis, but the funding is not yet confirmed.
The original recordings were made by Gavan Breen, Barry Blake and Jeffrey Stead. The linguist will be required to apply a standard orthography and produce a user-friendly description of the phonology, for the eventual purpose of teaching and demonstration.
The successful applicant will be required to travel in order to work with speakers, and to facilitate two language workshops. The transcription work will be done, as far as possible, in direct partnership with speakers. However, the linguist will also be expected to do as much as possible independently.
An additional outcome is the contribution of vocabulary for the 50 words project, derived from the transcription and translation work.
